How are you Celebrating Galentine’s Day?

How are you Celebrating Galentine’s Day this year?

“What’s that you say, “Galentine’s Day”? You meant Valentine’s Day, didn’t you?”

Nope, you heard me right, “Galentine’s Day“.

Happy Galentine's Day Cake.
Happy Galentine’s Day, Cake.

So, what is Galentine’s Day?

Well, I am glad you asked. Galentine’s Day is celebrated every year on the 13th of February, the Day before Valentine’s Day. This year (2023), Galentine’s Day will fall on a Monday.

The unofficial Holiday of Galentine’s Day is a celebration of female loyalty and friendship. A chance to get together without the fellers or your other half.’ Enjoy each other’s company, and if you are inclined, share gifts.

So if you think you need a reason or excuse to spend an evening, a morning, or even a whole day, in the company of your best girlfriends, then keep the Day before Valentine’s Day open in your diaries.

Weather permitting, what better way to celebrate Galentine’s Day than with the girls on a Galentine’s Day picnic?

Sound’s great, but where and when did the idea of Galentine’s Day begin?

If you think it’s another ploy by the greeting card companies to get you to spend your money, think again.

The writers/producers and performers of the American Situation Comedy TV show “Parks And Recreation” are credited with the fantastic idea of “Galentine’s Day”. In the episode of the same name where Amy Poehler’s character, Leslie Knope, describes the special Day…

“Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it… ladies celebrating ladies.” So, basically, it’s the greatest fake holiday ever!”

How can I Celebrate Galentine’s Day? I hear you ask!

Well, not on your own, that’s for sure.

Before you can celebrate what is probably “the greatest fake holiday ever”, you need to spread the word to let all your favourite girlfriends know that Galentine’s Day is a thing and exists. Then you can discuss and organise the Day with them.

Girls just want to have fun.

Are you a sporty bunch? Is a day at the icerink or the gocart track your thing, or a spa day?

In my earlier career as a care worker, my female colleagues and I had access to a hair salon (out of hours). I remember those Prosecco and peroxide nights well.

You may want to celebrate, ladies being ladies, with a meal out or by staying home having drinks with the girls.

A coffee morning could be your cup of tea or even afternoon tea.

Shhh! Celebrate Galian’s Day with a loud slogan or two.

If you enjoy your femaleness and don’t mind letting the world know, then why not go the whole hog and treat yourself and your girlfriends to a feminist-themed T-shirt or other great-looking garments from our partners in crime, “The Spark Company”? They have a great range of feminist-themed designs to browse.
